Where Wayanad Keeps a Story Older Than Us.
Edakkal Caves are spectacular natural rock clefts high atop the Ambukuthi Hills in Wayanad, Kerala, housing prehistoric Neolithic petroglyphs dating back to 6,000 BCE. A 45-minute uphill trek via steep concrete tracks and vertical steel stairs rewards travelers with expansive valley views. [1]

⏰ Timings: 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. Closed Mondays and national holidays.
⚠️ Cap: Strict limit of 1,920 visitors daily. Counters often close by 12:00 PM on weekends once filled.
💵 Cash Policy: Cash only. UPI/cards are not accepted due to poor hilltop network connectivity. A refundable cash deposit is required for plastic bottles.
🎟️ Tickets: ₹50 adults, ₹30 children, ₹60 foreign nationals. Parking (₹20) and optional lower-lot jeep shuttles (₹70/person) are extra.
📅 Best Visit: November to January. Arrive early (8:30 AM – 10:30 AM) to beat the intense sun on the unshaded iron stairs and secure a ticket slot.
👥 Suitability: Best for active travelers and history buffs. The steep incline and 300+ narrow vertical metal steps make this site unsuitable for infants, the elderly, or anyone with knee/respiratory conditions.
